The Birth of Super Crip Gets Some Media Attention

My novel is featured in the Delaware County Times today. “Read all about it,” as they say, right here . I wanted to thank the writer Susan L. Serbin for doing what I thought was a great job with the article. No sappy, inspirational stuff! UPDATE: Thanks to the Delco News Network for picking up the story.

A Moment of Not Dealing with Disability

There are days I just want to walk. Moments, really. Moments that seemingly come out of nowhere. A sudden, usually if not always overwhelming urge to be able to simply stand up and go wherever I want without thought or hesitation. It happened just yesterday afternoon at the ballpark as I looked down at the field. We were early, and the vast majority of the seats in front of us were empty. Kids and far too many adults crowded down by the fence or railing or just the barrier that separates fans from the field. They were seeking autographs, mostly from Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper. But I really didn’t care about them. I don’t think I wanted to be with them, doing what they were doing. There was something about all those empty seats. I actually interviewed Smith back in 1999 about his syndicated radio show on disability issues for a regular article I was writing as a freelancer for the Philadelphia Inquirer covering the disability community. The article about the only show on radio discussing disability issues at the time was rejected because it wasn’t a local story even though the show was available online, which obviously included the Philadelphia area. For various reasons, it turned out to be the last article I submitted for the column. I tried to come “full circle” in a way by submitting this article to the Inquirer, but it didn’t quite work out. (I knew it was a long

Latest article: Nonprofit Bike Giveaway Will Help Hundreds of Kids With Special Needs

It’s been a while since I wrote something approaching a “news” article. The article actually may fall under the “human interest” category that I believe generally depicts people with disabilities in a light that suggests they are “ inspirational ” or to be “ pitied ” somehow. Hopefully, I have avoided that pitfall to report on a genuinely good story. Check out the article on The Mobility Resource . The article also appears on the Huffington Post Impact section.
