Reach Past Your Limits: Tips on making exercise part of your life

Reach Past Your Limits cover
Does your gym membership suck money out of your bank account while you sit at home? Are your running sneakers lying in the closet losing their shape because they haven’t been on your feet in months? Is your bike collecting dust?

After more than 30 years of working out while living with cerebral palsy, I want to help readers of all abilities make exercise part of their life.

The book came out of working on a blog series called “Seeking Positive Answers.” I wanted to explore the idea of someone seeing my efforts to stay in shape as something special or inspirational. Reach Past Your Limits pulls concrete strategies from that moment of inspiration that will truly motivate people of all ability levels to exercise. I offer simple ideas that readers can use to get started immediately, including my “Top 4 Tips to Stay Motivated to Work Out.”

Finding time to work out, dealing with aches and pains, getting older . . . these are things that will get in the way of an exercise regimen for everyone at some point. As we age, staying motivated with realistic goals that still push us to be our best is essential. My experience in dealing with many obstacles to a healthier life gives me a unique perspective that will help readers choose exercise over excuses. From training to ride in a 75-mile cycling event to shooting baskets on a 10-foot regulation hoop despite a disability that complicates coordination, I’ve seen the importance of setting real life goals to do things that seem almost impossible. The book covers these topics and more in simple, easy-to-read chapters that will help you reach past your limits.

Reviews from readers:

“A quick, informative read that goes into the author’s views on motivation and provides concrete examples on how to set goals and maintain your focus/motivation when exercising. I’ve been slacking on the gym for a few months now since I started a new job and my schedule changed. Reading this is the push I needed to get back into the habit of making time to work out.”

“I learned about Rob’s writings from a friend and have read all of his books. They are all well written and fun to read. His sincerity and motivation shines through. He doesn’t dwell on his disability; rather he seems to be motivated by it. And the reality of it all, is that we all need to be motivated to be the best we can. I highly recommend Rob as a good read.”

My Workout

In this series of videos, I demonstrate some of the exercises that I do as part of my workout. The idea is to continue what I started with the book and motivate people to get started with their workout or to bring it to the next level.

What’s Your Favorite Exercise...

My interview series, “Exploring Motivation,” brings other voices to the site as we discover different perspectives on what motivates all of us. For some fun, I ask people, “What’s your favorite exercise?” and get them to offer a video demonstration.

Rebecca Levenberg answered my question, "What's your favorite exercise?" with an amazing video of her best climb at the Paraclimbing World Championships in Innsbruck, Austria. Read my entire interview with Rebecca on my blog.

Denise Alire, T’ai Chi Chih instructor and former personal trainer, answers my question, "What's your favorite exercise?" Read my entire interview with Denise in the second installment of "Exploring Motivation" on my blog.

My friend Tom Gibson demonstrates his favorite exercise as he helped me kickoff "Exploring Motivation." Read the full interview on my blog.
